I received my bachelor's degree in art history from Reed College in May, 2006. My academic focus is in contemporary arts, and my artistic focus is in photography and digital media. For my next step, I'm exploring MA programs in art history and arts administration - after taking a few years off to enjoy Portland.
Many years ago, I fell in love with web and graphic design. I have been making websites as a hobby for nine years, and I am currently the web designer for Spartacus Enterprises. I approach web design as an art, and while my skills tend to emphasize the aesthetic side of design, I am convinced that beauty and usability can live in harmony. My perfect website is not flashy or elaborate, but a simple, elegant experience that anyone can enjoy.
With my eye for composition and the exploration of the strange natural arrangements of space, my passion for layout translated easily into the pursuit of photography. I have had a year and a half of formal education in photography, learning the ins and outs of traditional black and white 35mm photography and printing, and three years experience exploring the whims of color and the thrill of immediacy with a digital SLR.
I have spent the past year working in freelance art criticism and management. My experience includes writing art reviews for Visual Codec magazine exploring the nuances of the burgeoning Portland art scene, as well as part time management for the Sugar Gallery organizing the exhibition calendar, maintaining contact with the artists, and designing monthly press releases. I have also recently begun keeping tabs on the Portland art world for PORT, a rapidly growing Portland arts resource.
My technical skills were honed during several years of computer support. I supported students and faculty at Reed College with all their non-hardware computing needs, and worked for Web Support Services doing a variety of projects for professors, including building course websites and image galleries, digitizing language tapes, editing lecture videos, and more. In my time at Reed's Computer User Services, I designed the 2005-2006 Student Technology Survival Guide, which won second place in the 2005 SIGUCCS awards. Through tech support, as well as several customer service jobs before I came to Reed, I have developed strong interpersonal skills and patience - I am comfortable working with people of any level of computing ability, and communicate well with customers and clients of all kinds.
